Low Fat Dietary Guide To Aid In The Management Of Skin Cancer

Step Two: Determining The Grams Of Fat You Should Consume

Once  you  have  estimated  your  daily   calorie  requirement,  you  can  easily calculate  the  daily  number  of  grams  of  fat  that you may consume to reach the goal of  20%  of  your  total  calorie  intake  from  fat.   Using  our  example  of  a  5’9”  man  of  medium build requiring 2300 calories per day,  we simply use the following formula:

2300 calories/day  x  20% = 460 calories  from fat/day

 460 calories from fat/day  ÷  9 calories/ gram of  fat* = 51 grams of  fat/day

* Fat is a very dense metabolic fuel and provides over twice the number of calories per  gram than either carbohydrate or protein.

Thus, the man in our example should consume no more than 51 grams of fat per day  if  he  is  to  achieve  his  goal  of  20%  of  his  total  calorie  intake  from  fat.  Alternatively,  you  may  refer  to  Appendix  III  (see below) where  we  have provided the calculated values in tabular form for you.
